Make strong choices, and commit, or the words do not come to being. And sadly, the viewers will not experience anything. Each time a choice is made, and the actor commits to following through on those choices, they increase their resilience. It just becomes a risk, on the other hand, if the acting professional has not mastered the skills and worked hard with an acting coach to build craftsmanship and self-assurance.

Emotion is a natural part of every human being and, with a Meisner acting studio, acting students are better able to use this integral aspect of themselves to create characters full of life and depth. When you are looking around for the perfect studio, you will want to consider the techniques that the studio uses to instruct its students. Although the Meisner method is certainly not the only choice available, many students and professional actors alike believe that it serves as one of the most beneficial techniques.

The Meisner technique typically consists of the repetition of phrases back and forth between students until the meaning becomes apparent and emotions come forth from the participating individuals. This encourages the students to use their own emotions and better interpret those of the other students in the group. Paying attention to the meaning and emotions behind the words as opposed to the words themselves is the purpose of Meisner acting. By doing so, the actor can create roles to which the audience can truly relate.

A Meisner acting studio can have a number of benefits to the aspiring or even experienced actor. A professional Meisner acting coach will do their best to help the student to use their own experiences to create real emotion onstage. The ultimate goal is to avoid basic memorization and pre-arranged performances and, instead, create a real-life, dynamic scene each and every time.

Making a choice as to which Meisner school you will attend can be intimidating but, fortunately, there are a number of items that can help you with the decision. Any studio you choose should strive to create an environment conducive to learning so that each student will feel comfortable enough to open themselves up to both knowledge and constructive criticism. Additionally, consider auditing your class to ensure that you are selecting a studio that offers frequent participation.

Using the Meisner technique, actors are able to learn how to both be more aware of their emotions as well as use those emotions to bolster their acting skills. We all have them so why not use them to create a believable and wonderful performance? Many students have found that attending a Meisner acting studio can not only improve their skills as an actor but also help them to delve into their feelings and psyche to better understand themselves as well.

Human beings are filled with emotion, a truth that a Meisner acting studio will well understand; taking this knowledge, such a school will create an environment in which an actor can use those natural emotions to better understand themselves as well as the roles they are called upon to play. When searching for a studio that will meet your acting needs, you will need to think about the teaching methods that the studio employs. Although the Meisner method is certainly not the only choice available, many students and professional actors alike believe that it serves as one of the most beneficial techniques.

Using simple phrases, the Meisner technique facilitates basic communication between students and allows them, through the back and forth repetition of these words, to find the meaning and emotion behind even the most mundane lines. Using this method, the students learn to read the emotions of others and respond accordingly in the appropriate scenario. The purpose of Meisner acting is to encourage actors to focus less on the lines themselves and more on the emotions behind them and their meaning. In so doing, the technique encourages actors to develop characters that can truly be understood by the audience.

Selecting a studio can be a bit overwhelming, even once you narrow it down to a school that uses the Meisner method as their primary teaching technique. Any studio you choose should strive to create an environment conducive to learning so that each student will feel comfortable enough to open themselves up to both knowledge and constructive criticism. Participation is another key component of acting school so you will want to find a studio that encourages frequent dialogue between students; auditing a class will help you gain better knowledge of this.

Emotions are a natural part of any human being and, with the Meisner technique, actors can learn to use this aspect of themselves to create real characters. After all, we all possess emotions so why not use them in our professional lives as well? Numerous students have discovered the many benefits of attending a Meisner acting studio, both in terms of personal growth as well as professional development.

With the start of the new year, more and more students are beginning to research and arrange their interviews for Meisner summer intensive programs.

How should you go about finding the ideal studio for you? There are many choices, particularly in a large city such as NYC. A summer acting program is usually more expensive than other sessions due to the fact that the studio often uses the tuition and fees from these classes to keep the school running until the next session of fall classes commences. With this in mind, you will want to make sure you have a thorough understanding of the studio and it’s goals; after all, attending an acting program is always an investment. Doing so will help you to avoid spending your money on a class that isn’t right for you.

The following items will help you to make your decision:

1. See What You Can Learn From the Studio’s Website

Research each studio thoroughly before you consider applying. Pay attention to the details. A website can be a great way to better understand the vision and goals of a studio. Do they freely describe their teaching goals and their overall mission? Do they seem to be targeting serious actors or are they more interested in sensationalist language that may seem impressive but really indicates a shallow experience? Does the site brag continuously about their teachers? Or do they seem more concerned with the needs of the students? Who does the studio send to meet with potential students? Is a purchase a necessary prerequisite to obtaining an interview? Ensure that all of these questions are answered to your satisfaction. The best studios are ones that focus primarily on the student.

2. Schedule a Studio Visit

Seeing the studio for yourself will help you obtain a better understanding of the school and it’s Meisner intensive program as well. Did the website present the studio accurately? Was the staff friendly? Was the staff forthcoming with information and were they willing and happy to answer all of your questions? Did you feel at-home? Is effort clearly spent making the studio look and feel attractive to students? Did you receive a tour? Was the studio a safe space that encourages learning?

3. Request a Recommendation From Other Actors You Trust

You can receive great recommendations from others who have attended similar programs. Remember that the flashiness of a studio is not, in itself, a good indicator of a professional school. Instead, you can get some real perspective from those with similar goals. You will want to seek out reviews from those who are true professionals.

One summer session is not going to equip you with all of the acting skills you need to succeed. However, there is no denying that a summer program can be highly beneficial to any acting career. In fact, with the right Meisner summer intensive class, an actor can both learn new skills as well as develop a greater love for their chosen profession.

Now that the year has started, beginning and experienced actors alike may be looking to apply for and interview for Meisner summer intensive programs.

How should you begin to find the right class for you? NYC offers acting students a number of acting program options. A summer acting program is usually more expensive than other sessions due to the fact that the studio often uses the tuition and fees from these classes to keep the school running until the next session of fall classes commences. Knowing what to look for in a studio will help you to make a decision that will provide you with the most benefit. Doing so will help you to avoid spending your money on a class that isn’t right for you.

These tips will help you with your decision:

1. See What You Can Learn From the Studio’s Website

Research each studio thoroughly before you consider applying. Be thorough. A website can be a great way to better understand the vision and goals of a studio. Does the website give you insight into the studio’s educational integrity? Does it seem as if the goal of the studio is to provide education to serious actors or are they more interested in appealing to the naive and unprofessional? Does the site spend too much time and space lauding the instructors? Or, instead, do they seem to care more about the goals of their students? When you visit, who meets with you? Is making a purchase necessary in order to even receive an interview? Ensure that all of these questions are answered to your satisfaction. You want a program that will focus on your needs.

2. Visit the School

Visiting the studio and seeing the place in action will help you get a better feel for the school before applying for a Meisner intensive class. Did the site present a honest picture of the facility? Did you feel welcome? Was everyone helpful? Did the studio feel stuffy and overbearing or was it open and friendly? Was it clean and attractive? Were you gladly given a tour? Did you feel as if the environment was conducive to productive learning?

3. Seek Out Recommendations From Others Who Have Attended Summer Programs

You can receive great recommendations from others who have attended similar programs. The true value of a studio is not based on expensive advertisements or empty promises of fame. Word-of-mouth reviews, on the other hand, are an excellent resource. You will want to seek out reviews from those who are true professionals.

A single summer session is not going to teach you all of the acting techniques you need. However, there is no denying that a summer program can be highly beneficial to any acting career. With a Meisner summer intensive program, many students can walk away with improved skills as well as an increased love of their art.

Predictability and familiarity are both dangerous during an acting audition. In New York, you don’t have to go far to see an actor trying desperately to memorize all of their lines before an audition. What many of these people don’t realize is that this is probably one of the worst things they can do.

Why is this? Memorable performances are not about memorization at all or the words contained in the script. The context and real emotion that you put into the performance are truly what matter. The best way to improve your acting audition is to read through your lines, use them as a guide, and go from there. The lines are only a small piece of the character; the interpretation and portrayal of the person is really up to you.

Once you have uncovered the back story and personality of a character, you can truly begin to create a meaningful performance. What really matters is not whether or not you interpret the ending correctly. Giving an impassioned performance is far more important. Are you spirited? Honest? Is it original and unanticipated? Do you take your story and give it all of your effort and passion? The story itself is far less important than delivering a captivating performance.

While being able to deliver your lines during an acting audition will be important, what is more impressive is your ability to interpret these lines in such a way as to give meaning and soul to your character. A character that is far richer than the director had previously imagined. That’s how to strengthen an acting audition.

How can you accomplish this? Don’t take your mental abilities for granted. So, don’t waste too much mental energy memorizing the words. At an audition, the panel will not be focusing primarily on your ability to memorize the script. As an actor, the best way to improve acting auditions is to spend your mental energy imagining the circumstances the character is in and the emotional truth that is BEHIND the words of dialogue. Of course, the sides may only be one scene or a few pages but, don’t let that be a hindrance.

If you have to, make some guesses about the character and story; there is no harm in that. Become the writer and create an entire set of circumstances and character traits that seem like they could relate to the clues you have found in the dialogue. It won’t matter if you’re wrong about the whys or hows, it will only matter if you deliver a flat boring performance because you didn’t create and commit to something real.

Don’t let the mental energy you have be wasted, instead use it to create an authentic character based on an entire set of imaginary circumstances, then act that in a fully committed way, from the gut. That will truly make an outstanding acting audition.

Emotion in acting is a subject that can be misunderstood by many actors, particularly those who are not trained. There are many individuals who mistakenly believe that a good actor is one who can cry and emote when required. For many it stands as a benchmark of talent. This is certainly not the case. Poor actors are those who simply want to feel. It’s the bad actor who will strive to force emotions to the surface. Few people in real life allow their feelings to readily be seen by others. As humans, we often do our best to hide our inmost thoughts and emotions for as long as possible. When it comes to acting, it’s important to put the focus on creating genuine, and not exaggerated emotions. Any good actor will work to achieve the proper balance when acting with emotions.

Giving an emotional performance is not what will make a role memorable. Relying on emotion is a dangerous game for any actor. What are you going to do on the nights when you don’t feel anything? Even on days when you aren’t feeling especially emotional, the show must still go on. Instead of focusing on emotions, an actor must place his or her attention on the craft itself. An actor with real technique is able to use real skills to both interact with others in the scene and create a performance that is both realistic and inspiring. When done correctly, proper crafting will naturally bring about emotion. Actors who do their homework, implant meanings, craft a personal acting relationship, and have worked out their actions and line intentions realize that the next step is to leave themselves alone and try to achieve something. If an actors placement of concentration is where it needs to be, and they truthfully do, then emotion will follow. A well-trained actor is aware that emotions serve merely as a pleasant background for a performance. While they are a great addition, they are not the most important aspect of a performance. All major roles require that the character have true depth to their emotions. Good acting requires the actor to act, rather than feel. Paying too much attention to emotional acting can cause an actor to become self-indulgent, essentially destroying their performance. They ouch louder than they are pinched, and they do not have a truthful reality.

It is important that there be a proper flow to the emotional development of an actor. In order to be a successful actor, a person must be able to develop and support real emotions. To infuse a character with life requires relaxed concentration. An emotionally alive actor should be aesthetically pleasing to watch. The goal is to relax, so that you can deliver a performance free of strain or forced emotions. An acting class will not help you to accomplish this. Instead, voice and movement classes are really the only way to go.

While there’s no denying that emotion in acting is a useful tool, it’s important to remember that it should not be focused on to the detriment of other essential skills.

Students in their second year are understandably preoccupied with entering the professional acting world. Working on audition monologues is a large part of preparing for this important transition. While monologues are going to be essential throughout an actor’s life, this is never more true than at the beginning of one’s career. Your ability to perform during an audition is, in large part, what a director or casting agent will use to determine whether the role is yours. Never underestimate the importance of your monologues; it is these that will boost your career until you have built an impressive resume. Until this point, though, your monologuing abilities are your best friend. In some instances, you will even be required to present two monologues that show your varying abilities. An arsenal of around ten monologues is ideal; you never know when you might need one. There is no denying that this requires a significant amount of work on the part of the actor.

It’s not always simple to choose monologues for auditions; there is limitless material out there to choose from. Hours and hours must be spent reading plays, watching quality television, and doing research in order to find the perfect material. Keep in mind that great scenes and lines do not always make the best monologues. The best audition monologues will be easy to understand and will have a clear start, middle, and finish. Do you connect to the material in your monologue? Are you able to start studying your monologue only to find that you discover something new about yourself along the way? To deliver a memorable monologue, you must be able to craft. You need to be spontaneous, creative, and able to work with the others in your production. Utilize your past experiences to flesh out your monologues. One of the biggest mistakes untrained actors make is to stand in one place and just mechanically recite their lines. Life does not work this way. We do not often speak in monologues. Monologues can occur, but only when the person to whom we are speaking does not interrupt. In normal conversations, each moment cannot be predicted; in order to make your monologues realistic, you must be spontaneous in your delivery. This requires a combination of talent and imagination.

Make sure that your monologues are as varied as possible. You want to make sure that you at least have a dramatic and comedic monologue in your repertoire. Once you have chosen a monologue, you will want to continue working on it in order to keep it fresh in your mind. Make sure that your performance takes the other people in the scene into consideration. This can be difficult since there is no one actually there while you are giving your monologue. You need to imagine what the other individual might say or do in reaction to the monologue you are performing. This is no easy task. Being unable to do this typically means that you require additional training. Formal training and continual learning can help you to improve in your craft as well as to nurture your creativity and love of acting; the result could be audition monologues that can help you to land the role you have always wanted.

In August, Maggie Flanigan Studio was pleased to welcome Cherry Jones to our acting class as a guest speaker. Perhaps one of the most striking parts of her speech was when she spoke about the importance of simplicity to her acting process. It was through the help of a talented director that Ms. Jones finally discovered how crucial simplicity truly was. It was almost like a light bulb went off in her head. I’ve known many actors whose acting coach has reminded them that they should go with the flow and accept the innate talents and skills they have. Hearing others tell you this time and time again can be particularly annoying if you aren’t quite sure what it even means. A lack of simplicity is the most common reason for this type of advice.

Don’t Overextend Yourself

What does simplicity really mean?

It is keeping the important things and omitting the rest. It means that you choose the character that you create. Unfortunately, far too many actors do too much. Along with being exhausting, working too hard during acting class almost always results in a poor performance. This can make your work seem forced and unappealing. Each character has a specific personality that has been largely predetermined by the writer. The screenwriter has also written out each cause and corresponding effect. Experienced actors know how to find these clues in the work. This allows the actor to determine the type of behavior that each character requires. In order to breathe life into their character, the actor requires both intuition as well as a combination of imagination and personal experience. The absolute best actors combine both simplicity and vivid interpretation. In fact, these actors are more like artists than anything else.

Mastering Simplicity Means Knowing Your Fundamentals First

You don’t want to make the error of equating simplicity with laziness. Many television classes don’t do right by their students. Instead of focusing on your skills, the average film acting teacher spends excessive amounts of time talking about tips and tricks for playing to the camera. Knowing the lines themselves and saying them on command is definitely not how simplicity in acting is defined. So, how can you improve your simplicity? First and foremost, find an acting studio that can train you and mold you into the actor you want to be. Pay attention to the fundamentals in acting class; listen and learn all you can, don’t overdo it, and make sure to have some fun while you’re at it. Cherry Jones graced Maggie Flanigan Studio with her presence during an acting class, where she spoke about her acting process and her career. Simplicity in acting was one of the topics she touched on. It wasn’t a realization that came early in her career; instead, she only realized it after years of acting experience. She had an epiphany, as it were. Many of my fellow actors have been told by their acting coach that they need to relax and accept who they are. It can be frustrating to hear this repeated to you over and over, especially if you aren’t sure how to take this advice and incorporate it into your career. It’s most often a lack of simplicity that prompts critiques like these.

Don’t Do More Than Necessary

What is the real meaning of simplicity?

It is keeping the important things and omitting the rest. Simplicity is about actively choosing your persona. Many actors make the mistake of doing too much, especially in the beginning of their acting career. Not only does this not produce the best results, it also takes an exorbitant amount of work to maintain this while in acting class. It causes your work to lose its clarity and poise. When creating their characters, screenwriters often imagine precisely how they want each personality to act. Each effect and its cause has already been predetermined. Real actors know how to look at the work and discover what the playwright intended. By so doing, they are able to more truly understand each character. This, along with imagination and a dash of creativity combined with a cache of life experiences, helps actors to complete the character. Simplicity and passion are what make truly great actors. These artists are the ones that truly excel.

Mastering Simplicity Means Knowing Your Fundamentals First

Simplicity and coasting are hardly the same thing. When it comes to learning acting, keep in mind that television courses are infamous for lacking important content. During television acting classes, the typical acting teacher will spend too much time on camera work and not enough time discussing true acting skills. Regurgitating lines is not what simplicity means. So, how can you improve your simplicity? First and foremost, find an acting studio that can train you and mold you into the actor you want to be. Make sure you learn all of the basics you can while in acting class; work with the others in your scene, don’t draw all of the attention to yourself, relax, and enjoy yourself.
